A Glimpse of Banksy “Without Limits”

The Art of Banksy “Without Limits” is touring Canada, and Edmonton is the show’s latest stop. Featuring over 200 artworks from the anonymous street artist, it’s the largest Banksy exhibit in the world. Until January 11th, you can explore it in the heart of Edmonton’s Arts District at the City Centre Mall. Whether you’re new to Banksy or a longtime fan, this is one show you won’t want to miss.

The exhibit spans two floors and includes four interactive rooms. The main floor features a timeline of Banksy’s work over the years, which is both informative and insightful. I came in knowing only that Banksy was a street artist and was familiar with a few of his popular pieces. I left with a much deeper appreciation for how he uses humor and satire to comment on issues that are pressing in today’s world.

My favourite room in the entire exhibit was the Infinity Room. The room is filled with mirrors from floor to ceiling, except for one wall where a projector plays a video of Banksy’s artwork. Not only is it a haven for mirror selfie lovers like me, but it also allows you to interact with the art in a completely new way. The mirrors extend and reflect the pieces, giving them a dimension you can’t experience anywhere else.

In the exhibit you can experience snippets of previous exhibits like The Walled of Hotel that was an exhibit that you were actually able to stay at while it was running, as well as Dismaland an exhibit that after it’s deconstruction the building materials were repurposed to make shelters for refugees in the Calais Jungle

There is no shortage of intriguing pieces. Banksy’s clever use of satire and real world props keeps you engaged from start to finish. It’s easy to see the creativity behind his work and why he has redefined the way we view art.

If you opt for a premium ticket, you can spray-paint your own t-shirt using a stencil of one of Banksy’s works. I recommend creating your shirt near the beginning of your visit so it has time to dry while you explore the exhibit.

Walking through The Art of Banksy: “Without Limits” was both fun and eye-opening. Each room offers a new perspective on art, society, and creativity. If you want an experience that’s equal parts entertaining and thought-provoking, you should catch this exhibit while it’s here.
